Bernd Büchner is the Scientific Director of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) since 2018 and a Full Professor of Experimental Physics at Technische Universität Dresden since 2003. He directs the Institute for Solid State Research (IFF) and temporarily oversees the Institute for Complex Materials. His academic journey includes a Diploma (1989), Doctorate (1993), and Habilitation (1999) in Physics from the University of Cologne.
Research Focus
Professor Büchner's research explores quantum phenomena in condensed matter systems, including:
- Iron-based superconductors, cuprates, and other unconventional superconductors
- Magnetic order phenomena and frustrated spin systems
- Novel materials: transition metal oxides, molecular magnets, and lanthanides
- Electronic properties of topological quantum materials
- Spin liquids and strongly correlated electron behavior
