Berna Turam is a Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities. Her research examines state-society interactions, particularly the interplay between security regimes and border-crossers. She has conducted extensive ethnography in Europe's external borders with the Middle East and North Africa.
Her research interests include borders, racial security, migration, and the transformation of violence into native-migrant solidarity. Recent publications analyze refugee resistance, urban activism, and political communities in Turkey.
Professor Turam has received several prestigious awards including a Fulbright Research Scholarship (2021-22), Max Planck Fellowship (2018), and Erasmus Fellowship (2017). She teaches courses on borders, international migration, and cities in global context.
