Benjamin Rabe

Dr. Benjamin Rabe serves as a Research Scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute, holding critical leadership roles in the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition as co-cruise leader for leg 2 and coordinator for the OCEAN team and Distributed Network task. His work centers on managing scientific operations during the Polarstern drift through extreme Arctic conditions.

Rabe's research spans the Arctic climate system with deep specialization in Ocean dynamics, Atmosphere interactions, Sea ice processes, Biogeochemistry, and Ecosystem studies. His fieldwork focuses on data collection across the Distributed Network while navigating challenges of polar darkness and subzero temperatures, directly contributing to understanding climate change impacts in the Arctic.

As Principal Investigator of multiple MOSAiC-related projects, Rabe oversees substantial research funding and international collaborations. He directs personnel management during Polarstern legs and supply cruises, coordinating complex logistical operations that enable year-round data acquisition across the drifting ice camp.

Rabe leads the OCEAN team within MOSAiC's Distributed Network, deploying instruments across the Arctic ice to monitor ocean-ice-atmosphere interactions. His operational expertise ensures continuous data flow from remote sensors throughout the expedition's duration, forming the backbone of MOSAiC's oceanographic research component.
