About
Benjamin R. Grady is an Associate Professor of Biology and Director of the Environmental Studies Program at Ripon College. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and M.S. and B.A. degrees from the University of Northern Iowa-Cedar Falls. His research focuses on evolution, ecology, and conservation, particularly studying wild buckwheat (Eriogonum) in North American deserts and pollinator diversity in Wisconsin prairies. He teaches courses ranging from introductory biology to advanced topics like Plant Diversity and Conservation Biology.
Education:
- Ph.D., Biology, University of Wisconsin-Madison
- M.S., Biology, University of Northern Iowa-Cedar Falls
- B.A., Biology, University of Northern Iowa-Cedar Falls
Research Interests: Dr. Grady’s work emphasizes understanding ecological and evolutionary processes in extreme environments. He investigates how plant species like wild buckwheat adapt to harsh desert conditions and explores the biodiversity of pollinators in prairie ecosystems. His lab at Ripon College engages students in field studies to document insect pollinators (bees, butterflies, etc.) in Wisconsin prairies, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts for these ecosystems.
Teaching Philosophy: Dr. Grady prioritizes hands-on, field-based learning, believing that direct engagement with nature deepens students’ understanding of biology. He designs assignments that encourage students to observe and interact with natural environments, such as measuring trees in winter or studying plant morphology in situ.
Labs/Teams: Students in his research lab collaborate on projects investigating prairie biodiversity and pollinator dynamics, contributing to broader ecological conservation goals.
