Benjamin O. Murphy is an Assistant Professor of Art History and Interim Director of Graduate Studies at Case Western Reserve University. His research focuses on modern and contemporary art, emphasizing global intersections of art, media, and political crisis, with a specialization in Latin America. He holds a PhD from Princeton University (2021), an MA from Williams College, and a BA from Washington University in St. Louis.
His current projects include a monograph on Latin American video artists of the 1970s and a trans-historical study of artists using money as a medium. He has published in ARTMargins and Texte zur Kunst, and his work has been supported by the Mellon Foundation, Fulbright, and the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art. Prof. Murphy previously served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon and curated exhibitions at institutions like Mexico’s Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo.
Key honors include Princeton’s Jane Faggen Prize (2023) and a CASVA Mellon Fellowship. His research bridges art history with sociology, emphasizing decolonial frameworks and interdisciplinary methodologies.
