About
Dr. Benjamin F. Hobbs is the Theodore M. and Kay W. Schad Professor of Environmental Management with joint appointments in Environmental Health and Engineering and Applied Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University. He directs the Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience and Justice (SIRJ) Lab and co-directs the Yale-JHU Solutions for Energy, Air, Climate, and Health Center.
Research focuses on:
- Energy market design under decarbonization constraints
- Climate resilience of infrastructure systems
- Water resource management and environmental policy
- Stochastic optimization for decision-making under uncertainty
His work integrates engineering-economic models to analyze policy impacts on emissions, costs, and reliability. Recent NSF/EPA-funded projects include ARROW (offshore wind workforce development) and EPICS (carbon-free power systems).
Honors include chairing CAISO's Market Surveillance Committee and editorial roles for Energy Economics and IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. Students investigate solar forecasting algorithms, energy policy impacts, and behind-the-meter storage solutions.
