Bengt Fadeel

Bengt Fadeel is a Professor of Medical Inflammation Research at the Karolinska Institutet, part of the Institute of Environmental Medicine’s Unit of Molecular Toxicology. He holds roles as Vice Chairman of the Institute and has been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS) since 2014 and a Member of Academia Europaea since 2024.

Education includes a University Medical Degree (1997) and PhD (1999) from Karolinska Institutet, along with Board Certification as a Physician (2001) and Docent (2004). His research focuses on nanomaterial safety, immune interactions, and cell death mechanisms, particularly involving graphene, MXenes, and carbon nanotubes.

Key research interests include nanotoxicity, biodegradation of nanomaterials, and their impact on immune systems. Notable achievements include pioneering studies on graphene’s microbiome-dependent immune effects and developing safety frameworks for nanomaterials.

Scientific awards include ATS Fellowship and Academia Europaea membership. His work spans over 200 publications, emphasizing hazard assessments, mechanistic modeling, and translational nanomedicine. Current projects include biocompatibility studies of 2D materials and ferroptosis-based cancer therapies.

Labs/groups include collaborations on nanoimmunity-by-design and the SweNanoSafe initiative. He advises on regulatory nanosafety and chairs panels for ethical nanotechnology use.
