Dr. Mitchell's research primarily focuses on evidence-based medicine and medical education, with particular emphasis on point-of-care clinical information. His work examines how general practitioners access and utilize evidence during patient consultations, antibiotic prescribing patterns, medical student education in general practice settings, and the implementation of clinical guidelines in primary care. Much of his research investigates the practical application of evidence in real-world clinical settings, addressing the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice.
Analysis of Dr. Mitchell's recent publications reveals a strong focus on antibiotic stewardship in primary care, with multiple studies examining prescribing patterns for respiratory tract infections. His work also explores innovative approaches to medical education, particularly regarding work-based assessment, feedback mechanisms, and the use of digital resources in teaching. A recurring theme across his publications is the practical application of evidence in clinical decision-making, reflecting his interest in evidence-based medicine. His research often employs mixed methods, combining quantitative analysis of practice patterns with qualitative insights into clinician and patient perspectives.
Dr. Mitchell has received research funding from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners for projects related to postpartum care in general practice (2012-2013). While not currently available for supervision, he has served as an Associate Advisor for a Master of Philosophy thesis completed in 2024 titled "The role of Australian General Practitioners in working with patients with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus," working alongside Emeritus Professor David McIntyre and Professor Leonie Callaway. His collaborative approach is evident in his extensive co-authorship with colleagues from the University of Queensland and other institutions.
