Ben Mauk is Professor of Journalism and Media Writing in the English Department at Case Western Reserve University. An Emmy and Peabody award-winning journalist, his work focuses on migration, nationalism, and border politics. His reporting has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Harper's, Granta, and the London Review of Books.
His documentary film 'Reeducated' examining Chinese reeducation camps won jury prizes at SXSW and NewImages festivals. Current projects include the forthcoming book The Fugitive World from Farrar, Straus and Giroux. As a 2024 National Fellow at New America and NEH Public Scholar, he investigates geopolitical borders and displacement narratives.
Mauk co-founded the Berlin Writers' Workshop and served as its director from 2017-2024. He holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop where he studied fiction.
