Beauty Umana is a Graduate Research Assistant at the School of Health Policy and Management, York University, and holds an adjunct lecturer position in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Cape Town. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Cape Town and previously taught at Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Her interdisciplinary research focuses on:
- Health equity and disease stigma in Black communities
- Sociolinguistics of migration and social justice
- Language policy's role in public health responses
- TB stigma mechanisms in South Africa
Her current project analyzes TB-related policy documents using critical discourse analysis to expose how language perpetuates stigma in healthcare systems.
