Beate Paulus

Professor Beate Paulus is a distinguished theoretical chemist at the Free University of Berlin, where she holds a professorship in the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the Department of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. Her research program bridges computational and experimental approaches to investigate fundamental electronic structure problems in diverse materials systems.

Her research interests span quantum chemistry, metal-insulator transitions, nanomaterials, and fluorine chemistry, with particular expertise in wavefunction-based ab-initio methods. Professor Paulus employs the method of increments to tackle challenging problems in metallic systems and low-dimensional materials, combining theoretical calculations with experimental validation to understand electron distributions and material properties at the atomic level.

Professor Paulus has secured substantial research funding through the German Research Foundation, leading multiple Priority Programs and serving as sub-project manager in Collaborative Research Centers. Her current research focuses on theoretical investigations of fluorine-specific interactions and in silico design of molecular 2D material heterostructures, continuing her longstanding expertise in computational materials chemistry.

As an educator, Professor Paulus is actively involved in graduate training through the Integrated Research Training Group, mentoring the next generation of theoretical chemists and contributing to specialized research training in fluorine chemistry and materials science.
