Bayard Roberts is a Professor of Health Systems and Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), based in the Faculty of Public Health's Health Services Research and Policy department. His work focuses on mixed-methods research addressing public health challenges in conflict-affected and displaced populations, particularly mental health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and alcohol use disorders. He leads major international projects like the Wellcome Trust-funded CHANGE initiative in Uganda and Ukraine and the UKRI-funded GOAL study in Lebanon.
Roberts holds a PhD from LSHTM and has held academic positions at the institution since 2005, progressing from Research Fellow to Professor. His education includes a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (University of London) and a Diploma in Management Studies (Birkbeck University).
His research interests span health systems resilience in crises, humanitarian health governance, and scalable interventions for vulnerable populations. He co-leads the Health in Humanitarian Crises Centre and chairs the MSc in Health in Humanitarian Crisis exam board. Roberts is also on the Board of Directors for the International Alliance for Diabetes Action and served on the R2HC funding panel (2016–2022).
He has secured over 20 grants from organizations like the Wellcome Trust, WHO, and CDC, focusing on mental health, NCDs, and conflict health systems. Notable projects include evaluating alcohol interventions in Ukraine and refugee mental health financing in Lebanon. Roberts has published extensively on humanitarian health systems, displacement, and alcohol use in crisis settings.
Teaching includes modules on humanitarian health project management and conflict health, with a focus on distance learning for global students. He advises on WHO initiatives for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and chairs academic committees at LSHTM.
