Basil Ugorji is an Instructor in Sociology at Mercy University's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the HJ International Graduate School for Peace and Public Leadership in New York City. He is the founder and executive director of the International Center for Ethno-Religious Mediation (ICERMediation), editor of the Journal of Living Together, and convener of the Annual International Conference on Ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding. His research focuses on transformative learning, historical memory, and national reconciliation in postwar societies, particularly examining unresolved historical trauma in transitional contexts like the Nigeria-Biafra War.
Educated in Nigeria, Togo, France, and the U.S., he holds a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University. His teaching includes courses on conflict management, anthropology, and mediation theory. He has trained over 100 professionals in advanced mediation practices and advised intergovernmental bodies like the UN and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. His work bridges academia and policy, emphasizing ethno-religious reconciliation and cultural revitalization.
Current projects include a transformative history textbook on the Nigeria-Biafra War and research on how historical education fosters reconciliation. His publications explore topics like ethno-religious conflict in Africa and systemic racism, reflecting his commitment to global peacebuilding strategies.
