- PhD, English Literature, University of East Anglia (2006)
His research spans contemporary British fiction, memory studies, digital humanities, and literary inclusivity. He leads several major interdisciplinary projects, including The Memory Network (AHRC/Wellcome Trust), Novel Perceptions (AHRC), Big Bookshare (Arts Council), and Write in the Head (Arts Council), which explores creative writing for stroke survivors. His work integrates neuroscience, technology, and creative practice to examine how literature shapes and reflects human cognition and social identity.
The most recent publications and projects reveal a strong trend toward interdisciplinary inquiry, blending literary analysis with digital technology, health humanities, and social justice. His books such as Right in the Head (2023) and Writing Under Fire (2024) combine personal narrative with broader cultural critique, while his edited collections and research initiatives emphasize inclusivity, transnational collaboration, and the transformative power of storytelling.
Bas Groes supervises PhD students, including Lily, whose work focuses on non-conscious cognition in contemporary fiction. He has secured significant funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Wellcome Trust, Arts Council England, and the Daiwa Foundation to support research on memory, digital inequality, and literary engagement.
He is actively involved in public scholarship, collaborating with the BBC, The Guardian, and various literary festivals. He also leads the 'Write in the Head' project, which has informed policy on reading in prisons, and has co-edited book series with Bloomsbury. His teaching includes innovative use of virtual reality in the 'Literature in the Digital Age' module.
