Barton Lipman is a Professor of Economics at Boston University, where he has served since 2002. He holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (1985) and a BPS in Radio Journalism from Memphis State University (1980). Lipman’s primary roles include Associate Dean of the Faculty in the Division of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (2024-present), and past leadership as Department Chair (2012–2020) and Director of Graduate Studies (2006–2012). He is also involved in professional administration, currently serving as Executive Vice President of the Econometric Society and an At-Large Representative for CSWEP.
His research focuses on decision theory, game theory, and mechanism design, with notable contributions to bounded rationality, evidence-based mechanisms, and strategic behavior under uncertainty. Lipman has edited major journals like Econometrica and Theoretical Economics, and received prestigious fellowships from the Econometric Society (2005), Game Theory Society (2017), and Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory (2011). He also holds teaching awards including the Gitner Award (2004) and two Graduate Advisor of the Year recognitions (2007, 2010).
His work has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation, spanning decades from 1985 to 2023. Lipman has extensively reviewed for top journals and organized key academic conferences, including the 10th World Congress of the Econometric Society and the Becker Friedman Institute’s Economic Theory Conference. Recent presentations include the 2023 Hotelling Lectures at the Latin American Meeting of the Econometric Society and the 2024 PIER Lecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
