Barry Smyth

Barry Smyth serves as the Digital Chair of Computer Science at University College Dublin within the School of Computer Science and Informatics, and directs CLARITY Centre for Sensor Web Technologies—a Science Foundation Ireland-funded research hub employing 100+ researchers.

His research spans artificial intelligence, recommender systems, sensor web technologies, and internet technology, evidenced by 350+ publications in leading journals and conferences. This work bridges theoretical AI with practical applications in sensor networks and social search systems.

As an entrepreneur, Smyth co-founded ChangingWorlds (acquired by Amdocs Inc in 2008) and HeyStaks, which secured €1 million in venture capital. His leadership in CLARITY integrates academic research with commercial innovation through large-scale industry partnerships.
