Barry McCoy

Barry McCoy is a Distinguished Professor of Physics at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received his BS from Cal Tech in 1963 and PhD from Harvard University in 1967. His research focuses on statistical mechanics and integrable models, with contributions spanning critical phenomena, random impurities, wetting transitions, Painlevé differential equations, quantum spin chains, and Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

He was awarded the 1999 Dannie Heineman Prize for groundbreaking work on classical statistical mechanics and integrable models. His research combines mathematical creativity with physical insight, leading to advancements in both physics and mathematics.

McCoy has advised numerous graduate students and has held visiting positions at Kyoto's Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Institut Henri Poincaré, and Australian National University. His work is supported by grants including NSF DMR 97-03543.
