Barry Martin Horowitz is a Professor in the Systems Engineering Program at the University of Virginia since 2001. He served as Department Chair from 2009 and holds the Munster Professor title. His research focuses on cybersecurity, wireless systems, and system-aware security solutions for airborne surveillance systems. He led major NSF-funded centers (WICAT and BWAC) and a DoD project on embedded cybersecurity for unmanned vehicles.

Research emphasizes cybersecurity applications in complex systems, including SCUD missile tracking during Desert Storm and FAA collision avoidance systems (TCAS). He chairs Virginia's Cyber Security Commission and advises GE's Academic Software Panel. Awards include the Air Force's highest civilian honor and NAE membership.
Past roles include President/CEO of Mitre Corporation (1991–1996), leading critical defense projects. Current efforts include Navy cyber security studies via the Naval Studies Board.
