Barry Kohl

Barry Kohl is an Adjunct Professor in Tulane University's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences within the School of Science & Engineering. His research focuses on Tertiary foraminiferal biostratigraphy, applied micropaleontology, and Quaternary sea-level changes affecting Gulf of Mexico shelf-slope systems.

Education includes a Ph.D. from Tulane University (1980), M.A. from University of Missouri (1969), and B.S. from Purdue University (1964). Publications span paleoenvironmental reconstructions using microfossils, with emphasis on Pleistocene deltas, coral mound development, and glacial sediment transport. Recent work (2018-2021) examines Lophelia coral mounds and Devonian algal cyst transport during glaciation.

Collaborative studies integrate biostratigraphy, sedimentology, and sequence stratigraphy to interpret Gulf of Mexico depositional history from the Pliocene to Holocene.
