Barry Condron is a Professor of Biology at the University of Virginia and Director of Graduate Admissions. His research focuses on understanding brain development principles and their application to disease. He holds a B.S. from University College Cork (1985) and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah (1991). His lab investigates serotonergic systems, Drosophila neural circuits, and visual system plasticity, with recent work on cooperative behavior in larvae. Key collaborations include projects with Janelia Research Campus. His work bridges developmental neurobiology, genetics, and computational neuroscience, emphasizing critical periods in social brain development. He maintains the Condron Lab (Gilmer 415) and has published extensively on neural circuit mapping and behavior.
Research interests include the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodevelopment, leveraging Drosophila as a model system. Recent studies explore how environmental factors like temperature and visual cues influence cooperative behaviors and neural plasticity. His lab develops novel imaging and computational tools for neuron segmentation and comparison, such as the Tubularity flow field method and Neuropath2path algorithm. He actively contributes to open neuroscience data initiatives via platforms like CRCNS.
