Barney J. Stern

Barney J. Stern is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland. He is certified in Internal Medicine, Neurology, and Vascular Neurology, and holds leadership roles as Vice-Chair of Neurology, Stewart J. Greenebaum Endowed Professor in Stroke Neurology, Co-Director of the Stroke Division, and Director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Stern’s research focuses on stroke (acute care, systems of care, stroke in the young, intracranial atherosclerosis, prevention) and neurosarcoidosis, with a particular emphasis on neurological complications of sarcoidosis. His work spans clinical trials, safety monitoring, and neuropharmacology.

Recent publications highlight his contributions to stroke prevention, neurosarcoidosis, and neurovascular disorders. Articles include studies on glibenclamide’s role in cerebral ischemia, anticoagulant therapies for intracranial stenosis, and stroke epidemiology in pregnancy.

Dr. Stern actively participates in stroke research as a site principal investigator, medical safety monitor, and Data and Safety Monitoring Board member. He is recognized as a senior authority on neurosarcoidosis and plays a pivotal role in advancing stroke care through leadership in the Stroke Division and Comprehensive Stroke Center.
