Barbara Timmermann is a Professor in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. She leads research in natural products chemistry, drug discovery, and botanical dietary supplements. Her work spans over 40 years, with significant grants including NIH-funded programs like the Arizona Center for Phytomedicine Research (2000-2005) and the COBRE Center for Cancer Experimental Therapeutics (2006-2015). She has mentored numerous students and postdoctoral researchers, focusing on isolating biologically active molecules from plants and microbes. Her research includes studies on turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects and biodiversity prospecting for drug leads in Latin America.
Her research interests encompass safety and efficacy of botanical supplements, chemotaxonomy, and interactions of natural products with cellular transport proteins. She has authored/co-authored over 210 peer-reviewed publications and serves as a co-editor of scientific volumes. She previously chaired the Department of Medicinal Chemistry (2005-2012) and completed the Senior Administrative Fellow Program (2010-2011).
