About
Barbara Reul is a full professor of musicology at Luther College, University of Regina, where she teaches courses ranging from introductory music appreciation to graduate seminars. Her academic leadership includes serving as President (2008-2011) and Vice-President (2015-2019) of the International Fasch Society and co-editing the peer-reviewed journal Discussing Bach since 2020.
Professor Reul's research centers on Baroque musicology with dual specializations: early 18th-century German court music (particularly Johann Friedrich Fasch and the Anhalt-Zerbst court) and lived experience narratives. Her archival work reconstructs musical life through primary sources, while her innovative cancer survivorship memoirs—published as open educational resources—bridge personal narrative and academic discourse. She presents research internationally in both English and German, demonstrating methodological versatility.
Her recent publications reveal consistent output across traditional scholarship and narrative innovation. Musicology journals feature her archival discoveries about Fasch's career, while interdisciplinary outlets publish her analysis of life writing as healing. The co-edited Discussing Bach volumes and Musik in Anhalt-Zerbst (2019) demonstrate collaborative leadership in Baroque studies.
Professor Reul received the International Fasch Prize (2005) for her foundational contributions to Fasch scholarship. Her editorial work with Fasch-Studien and Grove Music Online entries further cement her reputation as a leading authority.
She actively supervises graduate students through MU 815 (Graduate Bibliography) and specialized reading courses. Her 2025-2026 teaching includes Music, Women, and Culture and The Story of Opera, reflecting her commitment to both historical and contemporary musicological inquiry. Beyond academia, she serves as head organist at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Regina.
While not leading a formal research lab, Professor Reul cultivates scholarly communities through the Bach Network and International Fasch Society. Her pandemic-era Impetus contributions documented global academic adaptation, and her open-access memoirs have reached international audiences through platforms like LibreTexts.org.
