Penner's research focuses on the social and cultural dimensions of everyday spaces, examining how domestic environments, urban infrastructure, and commercial architecture shape social identities. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates architectural history with anthropology, literary theory, and cultural studies, particularly exploring gender dynamics in spaces like bathrooms, kitchens, hotels, and housing.
Her publications reveal consistent engagement with themes of gender, domesticity, and infrastructure across historical periods. Recent scholarship examines social scientific research in home design, urine diversion systems, and historical housing models.
