Barbara Meyer is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Professor of Genetics, Genomics, Evolution, and Development at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on the interplay between chromosome structure and function, particularly in Caenorhabditis elegans. Key areas include chromosome counting for sex determination, X-chromosome dosage compensation, and the role of condensin complexes in chromatin architecture. Her work combines genetic, genomic, and biochemical approaches to uncover mechanisms regulating gene expression and chromosome dynamics.
She has been recognized with prestigious awards, including membership in the National Academy of Medicine, the E.B. Wilson Medal, and the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal. Her lab is part of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology in Berkeley’s Koshland Hall. Meyer has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, fostering advancements in developmental genetics and epigenetics.
