Barbara M. Townsend

Barbara M. Townsend serves as an Associate Professor in the Psychology and Counseling Department at Gannon University. She has been a dedicated faculty member since 2000, initially joining as an adjunct lecturer and now teaching core courses including Introduction to Psychology, Human Development, and overseeing the undergraduate internship program since 2015.

Her academic credentials include a BS in Biology from Pennsylvania State University and an MS in Counseling Psychology from Gannon University (1998).

Dr. Townsend's professional focus encompasses counseling psychology, human development, and innovative teaching methods. She has notably developed her Human Development course into an engaging life skills curriculum. Her leadership in the internship program has significantly expanded opportunities for psychology majors to gain practical experience.

Notable awards include the Student Government Association Excellence in Teaching Award (2000-2001) and the Alpha Sigma Alpha / Alpha Gamma Delta Teacher of the Year Award (2012-2013), reflecting her commitment to student engagement.

She actively contributes to campus life through service as a Safe Network committee member and training team member, faculty co-advisor for the LIFE student support group, and participation in the GU Mentoring Program for new faculty.
