Dr Barbara Engel is a Senior Teaching Fellow and Visiting Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences (Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences). She holds a BSc and PhD, is a Registered Dietitian, and has over 30 years of clinical and academic experience in renal disease, gastroenterology, diabetes, and intensive care. She formerly served as Programme Director for the Dietetics program at Surrey for ten years and led the Renal Nutrition Group. Her research focuses on nutritional management in chronic diseases, including renal disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and public health initiatives.

Dr Engel's clinical work includes managing acute dietetic services and caring for complex patients like pregnant dialysis patients. She currently advises on nutrition support teams and contributes to global health initiatives addressing malnutrition in tropical disease contexts.
