Barbara Carter, PhD, is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Transpersonal Counseling Psychology at Naropa University. She teaches in the MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs, including mindfulness-based transpersonal counseling concentrations (residential and low-residency). Her expertise spans clinical psychology, mindfulness, and transpersonal approaches to healing. She holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from The Union Institute and University (1992), an MS in Occupational Therapy (Boston University, 1984), and a BS in Elementary and Art Education (New Mexico State University, 1978).
Barbara’s career includes over three decades of clinical work, Peace Corps service in Micronesia, cross-cultural training, and developing biofeedback programs for stress-related issues. She trained in Hakomi and mindfulness with leaders like Ron Kurtz and Marsha Linehan, and advanced studies with Stanislav Grof in transpersonal psychology. She chairs Naropa’s Mindfulness Instructor Training Program and focuses on integrating mindfulness, emotions, and compassion into therapeutic practice.
Her contributions include pioneering Naropa’s first online transpersonal psychology course and leading the department as Chair. She is certified by the Engaged Mindfulness Institute and Naropa’s mindfulness training program.
