About
Barbara Bonechi is a Research Fellow in Earth and Environmental Sciences at The University of Manchester. Her research focuses on experimental petrology and volcanology, particularly investigating magma dynamics, degassing processes, and crust-mantle interactions. She holds a PhD from Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza (2021), where she also completed her MSc (2017) and BSc (2015). Her work combines high-pressure experiments, numerical modeling, and field observations to understand volcanic systems such as Campi Flegrei, Cumbre Vieja (La Palma), and the Canary Islands.
- Education:
- PhD: High pressure experiments on Campi Flegrei magmas (2017–2020)
- MSc: Experimental study of H2O-rich magmas (2015–2017)
- BSc: High-pressure crystallization experiments (2012–2015)
Her research interests include magma storage, eruption dynamics, trace element partitioning, and synchrotron-based techniques like X-ray tomography. She has pioneered methods for observing real-time degassing in magmas and contributed to understanding the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption's mechanisms. Bonechi has received prestigious awards including the AIV Best Doctoral Thesis Award (2022) and the DEES PDRA Research Fund (2024).
She advises multiple PhD students in magma dynamics and collaborates on grants from institutions like the PVRG and SIMP. Bonechi actively organizes international conferences, including the 2025 IAVCEI Scientific Assembly, and has published extensively in Bulletin of Volcanology and Journal of Geophysical Research.
