She holds a Ph.D. from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, completed in 1994.
Professor Applebaum's research lies at the intersection of ethics, education, and diversity, drawing on feminist ethics, feminist philosophy, and critical race theory. She investigates theories of self and agency necessary for sustaining social justice education initiatives, with focused work on critical whiteness studies, how white teachers negotiate their whiteness while committed to social justice, and conditions for just dialogue derived from epistemic injustice scholarship. Her scholarship also explores teacher self-reflection, classroom trust-building, and feminist interpretations of pedagogical authority.
