Axelle Karera is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Emory University. Her research focuses on intersections between 20th-century continental philosophy, Black critical theory, contemporary critical theory, and environmental humanities. She holds a PhD (2015), MA (2012), and BA (2009) from Pennsylvania State University and York University respectively.
Research Interests: Dr. Karera examines questions of relationality in new materialist ontology and speculative realism, particularly regarding the ethical implications of Anthropocene discourse. Her current monograph project, The Climate of Race: Blackness and the Pitfalls of Anthropocene Ethics, critiques disavowals of racial ecocide in environmental ethics. Her work engages Blackness as an ontological category while interrogating metaphysical frameworks' complicity in ecological crises.
