About
Dr Axel Rossberg is a Reader in Theoretical Ecology at Queen Mary University of London, leading the Centre for Biodiversity and Sustainability within the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences. He holds a PhD and has been affiliated with the university since at least 2019. His research focuses on developing theoretical ecological models to address biodiversity patterns, conservation finance mechanisms (e.g., Biodiversity Impact Credits), and complex systems dynamics.
Research interests include:
- Ecological model development for consistent theoretical frameworks
- Biodiversity finance and market-based conservation solutions
- Applications to fisheries management and climate change adaptation
Recent publications (2021–2025) explore topics like species turnover dynamics, biodiversity credit metrics, and drone-based bioacoustic monitoring. He has secured significant grants from NERC, DEFRA, and EPSRC (total funding: £1.8m+ over 2020–2025), addressing biodiversity finance, fisheries management, and ecosystem response modelling.
Supervises PhD students (e.g., Thomas Del Santo O'Neill) and postdoctoral researchers (e.g., Beth Mindel). His teaching includes modules on ecological theory and bioinformatics in MSc programs.
Roles: Head of Centre for Biodiversity and Sustainability, active contributor to the IPBES Regional Assessment for Europe/Central Asia.
