Dr. Awino Okech is a Visiting Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the African Leadership Centre, part of King's College London's School of Global Affairs within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. Her research focuses on women’s rights in conflict/post-conflict societies, security sector governance, and social justice in Eastern Africa and the Sahel region. She has collaborated with international organizations such as the African Union, UNDP, and UNECA on high-profile projects, including drafting the African Union’s Gender and Security Sector Reform guidelines and analyzing conflicts in the Sahel.
Awino teaches in the MSc in Security, Leadership and Society program, co-convening the Gender Leadership and Society module. She serves on the editorial advisory board of Feminist Africa and is a member of the African Security Sector Network. Her work bridges academic research and policy advocacy, emphasizing gender equity in security governance and post-conflict reconstruction.
Her publications explore themes like gendered security dynamics, asymmetrical conflict resolution, and security sector reforms in Africa. She has contributed to peer-reviewed journals such as the Africa Peace and Conflict Journal and the Strategic Review of Southern Africa.
