Aviva Ben-Ur

Aviva Ben-Ur is Professor of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies at UMass Amherst, specializing in Atlantic Jewish history and slavery studies. Her research examines Jewish communities in slave societies and Ottoman diaspora experiences.

Her monograph 'Jewish Autonomy in a Slave Society' explores Suriname's Jewish community. She holds adjunct appointments in History and Comparative Literature.

Ben-Ur received the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation Fellowship for her current project on citizenship struggles of Ottoman minorities in early 20th-century Europe.
