Ava Becker

Ava Becker is an Assistant Professor in the Secondary Education Department at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Education, specializing in language, migration, and trauma. She holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and MA/BA degrees from the University of Alberta. Her research explores intergenerational trauma, plurilingualism, and multimodal research methods. She leads SSHRC-funded projects on care ethics in education and multilingual youth methodologies, and serves as Secretary for the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics.

Dr. Becker teaches EDSE 307 (Language, Literacy, and Society) and coordinates graduate courses like EDSE 511 (Research Design). She is actively involved in professional organizations, including AILA Secretariat Team Lead roles. Her funded projects address topics such as heritage language socialization, care ethics in writing pedagogy, and HIV/AIDS education in Ugandan schools. She advises graduate students focused on multilingualism, mental health, and educational equity.

Her publications span applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and critical pedagogy, with a focus on visual and qualitative methodologies. She emphasizes supporting multilingual learners through innovative teaching strategies and community-engaged research.
