Austin Steelman

Austin Steelman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Clemson University, College of Arts and Humanities. His research bridges legal, intellectual, and religious history in 20th-century America, focusing on conservatism and evangelicalism.

Education:

• Ph.D., Stanford University (2024)

Steelman’s work explores intersections of biblical inerrancy and constitutional originalism, particularly in the context of the evangelical right’s influence on modern American politics and law. Prior to academia, he practiced intellectual property litigation for two years.

His publications reflect interdisciplinary engagement with legal and religious ideologies, combining historical analysis with contemporary debates in jurisprudence and theological traditions. Steelman’s current book project, Paper Gods: The Bible, the Constitution, and the Evangelical Revolt Against Modernity, 1923-1986, synthesizes these themes.
