Austin Hartman

Austin Hartman serves as Professor of Practice in violin at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and is the first violinist of the Pacifica Quartet, the school's quartet-in-residence. Based in the Department of Strings within the East Studio Building (JS221), he maintains an active performance and teaching career with contact via akhartma@iu.edu and 812-855-4220.

His educational foundation includes Artist Diplomas from The Juilliard School and Yale School of Music, complemented by degrees from New England Conservatory and Cleveland Institute of Music.

Hartman's artistic focus centers on violin performance and chamber music, specializing in string quartet repertoire through both solo and collaborative frameworks. His international career spans concert stages across North America, Europe, and Asia, emphasizing interpretive depth in classical and contemporary works.

Notable honors include:

• Stulberg International Competition victory
• Naumburg Award as founding Biava Quartet member
• Top prizes at Premio Borciani Competition
• London International String Quartet Competition laureate

As an educator, he previously served as Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Indianapolis and maintains festival faculty appointments while mentoring students at IU. His recording portfolio features releases on Albany, Naxos, and Cedille labels with BBC Radio 3 broadcasts.

Hartman's primary artistic vehicle is the Pacifica Quartet, where he leads repertoire development and performance initiatives as quartet-in-residence at the Jacobs School of Music.
