Austin Freeman

Austin Freeman is an Assistant Professor of Apologetics and Chair of the Department of Apologetics at Houston Christian University (HCU). His academic background includes a PhD in Systematic Theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, an MTh in Historical Theology from the University of Edinburgh, and a BA in Religious Studies and Philosophy from Rhodes College.

His research focuses on cultural apologetics, particularly the intersection of theology with literature, with a specialization in J.R.R. Tolkien's theological themes. He also engages interdisciplinary topics such as angelology, medieval philosophy, and the theology of fantasy literature.

Freeman’s publications span edited volumes, co-edited collections, and peer-reviewed articles, including works on Tolkien’s theology, comparative theology, and pop culture. Recent works include Tolkien among the Theologians (2024) and Theology, Fantasy, & the Imagination (2023). His writing often bridges classical and modern thought, exploring themes like evil, divine hierarchies, and the role of imagination in theological discourse.

In addition to his academic roles, Freeman advocates for classical education, encouraging students to pursue teaching careers in classical schools. He teaches courses on ancient philosophy, apologetics, and theology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to Christian thought.
