Aurora Marijke Martin

Dr. Aurora Marijke Martin is an Associate Professor of History of Modern/Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on urban transformation in non-Western regions, post-conflict urban renewal, and the role of architecture in civic education (Bildung). She holds a PhD (1997) and MA (1986) from the University of Groningen, with additional research experience at the Institut Français d'Architecture in Paris.

Teaching responsibilities include modules on architecture, urban planning, and health, with a focus on international collaborations (e.g., Erasmus exchange programs, summer schools in Medellín and Prague). She has organized interdisciplinary initiatives like the 'Traumatized Cities' summer school and co-founded the Dutch Alliance for Sustainable Urbanism in Africa (DASUDA).

Research projects include investigations into housing policies in Sub-Saharan Africa, Czech urban emancipation through architecture, and the medicalization of cities. She co-authored/co-edited influential works such as Bogotá: El Renacer de una Ciudad (2007) and contributed to EU-funded initiatives like the COST Action on placemaking and digitization (CA18204).

Her administrative roles include membership in the Master Arts & Culture Program Commission and leadership in the Department of Art and Architecture History. She has supervised multiple PhD students, including recipients of prestigious awards like the Jan van Gelder Prize.
