Atiqa Hachimi is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), cross-appointed in the Department of Linguistics. She holds roles as Associate Chair, Teaching, and contributes to the Women's and Gender Studies and African Studies programs. Her research focuses on sociolinguistic dynamics in the Arab world, particularly in Morocco.
Education: B.A (Moulay Ismail University), M.A., and Ph.D. (University of Hawai'i).
Research Interests: Sociolinguistics, language and gender, language contact, multilingualism, and globalization's impact on language. Notably, her work examines migration's influence on spoken Arabic in Casablanca and coining the 'Maghreb-Mashreq language ideology' framework.
Publications: Authored Variability of nominal genitives in Casablanca Moroccan Arabic (2015) and published in journals like Journal of Sociolinguistics, Language in Society, and Social and Cultural Geography.
Teaching & Engagement: Taught courses on language and gender, sociolinguistics, and language in the Arab world. Served as a founding affiliate of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (2015).
