Atef S. Said is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), specializing in sociological theory, political sociology, and the sociology of the Middle East. His research explores revolutions, social change, and the evolving dynamics of democracy in the 21st century. Before academia, he worked as a human rights attorney and researcher in Egypt from 1995 to 2004, authoring books such as Torture in Egypt: A Judicial Reality and Torture Is a Crime Against Humanity. He holds a PhD from the University of Michigan, where his dissertation on Cairo’s Tahrir Square earned the ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award.
Research Focus: Current projects include analyzing the future of revolutions in relation to coloniality and decoloniality, and examining the rise of neoliberal authoritarianism and digital capitalism’s impact on democracy. His work bridges theoretical scholarship with historical analysis, emphasizing global sociological perspectives.
