Astrid Schubring is a full professor of sociology of sport at the German Sport University Cologne, leading the Sociology of Sport section at the Institute of Sociology and Gender Studies. She holds a PhD from the University of Tübingen (2014) and a habilitation from the University of Gothenburg (2019). Her research focuses on athlete health, career pathways of Olympic/Paralympic athletes, youth socialization in sports, body ideals in adolescence, and innovative research methods. She has held academic positions at the Universities of Halmstad, Tübingen, and Heidelberg.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing health and social sustainability in sport. She currently serves as Secretary General of the European Association for Sociology of Sport (until 2025) and leads projects like QualiFT (gender equity in elite sport coaching) and evaluations of the Swedish elite sport system. She is a frequent speaker and media contributor on topics like body ideals and athlete well-being.
