Asiya Alam

Asiya Alam is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Director of the Program in Asian Studies at Louisiana State University (LSU). She holds affiliations within the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. Dr. Alam earned a Ph.D. in History from the University of Texas at Austin (2013), and Master's degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2006-2008) and the University of Chicago (2004-2005). Her research focuses on gender studies, family histories, Islam in modern South Asia, and intersections of liberalism and feminism. She advises thesis work on South Asian studies, modern Middle Eastern history, women’s movements, gender relations, and Islamic histories. Dr. Alam has received prestigious awards including a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University and a Graduate Dissertation Writing Fellowship. Her scholarship explores themes like colonial legal discourse and gender narratives. As Director of Asian Studies, she oversees interdisciplinary programs and academic initiatives.
