Dr. Ashfaq Adnan is a distinguished university professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and director of the Multiscale Mechanics and Physics Lab (MMPL). He earned his PhD from Purdue University in 2008 and has held academic positions at UTA since 2010, progressing from Assistant to Associate Professor before becoming a full Professor in 2016. He also serves part-time with the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in the ENG-CMMI division.
His research focuses on multiscale mechanics of traumatic brain injury (TBI), brain injury sensing, and biomechanics of soft materials. His work is supported by grants from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), NSF, and others. Adnan has authored over 100 publications and holds patents in nanocomposite materials. He leads interdisciplinary initiatives like the PANTHER research hub, investigating TBI mechanisms and prevention.
Adnan has received prestigious awards, including the 2021 Distinguished Fellow Program Award (DoD/ONR), ASME Fellowship (2020), and 2020 Lockheed Martin Teaching Award. He has advised numerous graduate students and contributes to teaching courses in mechanics of materials and structural analysis.
His research labs and collaborations involve advanced modeling, experimental studies, and additive manufacturing for protective materials. He actively participates in academic service, including NSF expert roles and conference keynote speaking engagements.
