Arve Hjelseth

Arve Hjelseth is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology). His academic journey includes a magister degree from the University of Oslo (1992) and a dr.polit PhD from the University of Bergen (2006). He has held teaching and research positions at multiple institutions, including NTNU since 1996. Hjelseth specializes in the sociology of sports and cultural sociology, focusing on commercialization of sports, spectator cultures, and youth sport dynamics. He received the 2022 Research Dissemination Award from the Norwegian Sociological Association.

His research spans topics like elite sports governance, gender pay disparities in football, and fan culture evolution. Recent publications include analyses of biathlon festivalization, supporter identity, and the scientification of Norwegian football. Hjelseth has also engaged in public outreach through interviews and lectures, addressing issues like healthcare coordination and the societal role of sports.
