About
Arpad Horvath is the Lawrence E. Peirano Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, where he heads the Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate Graduate Program. He also directs the Transportation Sustainability Research Center and the Engineering and Business for Sustainability Certificate Program. An elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Construction, his research focuses on life-cycle environmental assessment of infrastructure systems.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University (1997)
- M.S. in Civil Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University (1995)
- Dipl.Eng. in Civil Engineering, Technical University of Budapest, Hungary (1993)
Research Interests:
Professor Horvath specializes in life-cycle assessment (LCA) of civil infrastructure, including transportation systems, buildings, water networks, and construction materials. His work integrates environmental management, sustainability metrics, and green design principles to evaluate system-wide environmental impacts. Key focus areas include reducing greenhouse gas emissions in built environments, developing decision-support tools for sustainable infrastructure, and analyzing food-energy-water nexus challenges.
Publication Trends:
His recent articles (2022-2024) demonstrate strong focus on decarbonization strategies for buildings and infrastructure, air quality modeling, sustainable material innovation, and urban agriculture systems. Methodologically, they emphasize life-cycle assessment frameworks, uncertainty quantification, and multi-objective optimization to address climate change and environmental justice challenges.
Awards and Honors:
- Member, U.S. National Academy of Engineering
- Member, National Academy of Construction
- Laudise Prize (International Society for Industrial Ecology)
- Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize
- UC Berkeley Chancellor's Sustainability Award
- Excellence in Review Award (Environmental Science & Technology)
- Three top-three papers in Environmental Science & Technology (2008, 2011, 2012)
- NSF CAREER Award
Academic Leadership:
He has advised 18+ Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers. Current research projects include NSF-funded work on environmental justice in transportation planning and USDA-supported studies on urban agriculture. As Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Research: Infrastructure and Sustainability, he leads scholarly discourse on sustainable infrastructure solutions.
Institutional Roles:
He directs the Transportation Sustainability Research Center and Consortium on Green Design and Manufacturing, facilitating cross-disciplinary collaboration on sustainability challenges. His laboratories focus on life-cycle assessment methodologies and infrastructure sustainability modeling.
