Arnulf Becker Lorca

Arnulf Becker Lorca is a Full-time Professor of Public International Law at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence and a Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School. He holds a doctoral degree from Harvard Law School and has taught at King’s College London, Brown University, the University of Helsinki, and Amherst College. His research focuses on the intellectual history of international law from a Global South perspective, emphasizing decolonial and critical approaches. He co-directs the Academy of European Law at EUI.

Education: PhD in Law from Harvard Law School.

Research Interests: Global governance, climate change, human rights, colonial legal history, Latin American legal traditions, and critical international law. His landmark book, Mestizo International Law: A Global Intellectual History, 1842–1933 (Cambridge UP, 2015), won the 2016 European Society of International Law Book Prize. Recent projects include studies on the Spanish/Amerindian encounter, redistributive strategies in international law, and constitutional law traditions of the Global South.

Advising and Grants: Supervises PhD candidates including Auna Ulloa, Lala Darchinova, and Marta Da Rocha Diogo. His work as a legal adviser to Chile’s Constitutional Convention highlights his engagement with contemporary legal reform.

Labs/Teams: Co-Director of the Academy of European Law, EUI. Active in research clusters such as the International Law Working Group and the Combative Solidarity project on redistributive legal strategies.
