Arno Bergmann

Dr. Arno Bergmann is a Group Leader at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, leading the Dynamics at Electrocatalytic Interfaces research group within the ISC Department and Department of Interface Science. His work focuses on fundamental understanding of electrochemical energy conversion processes, particularly in CO₂ reduction, nitrate/nitrite reduction, and oxygen evolution reactions. Key techniques include operando X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and synchrotron-based methods.

Research interests emphasize designing efficient and durable catalysts using model systems like nanoparticles and thin films. Collaborations with groups in liquid electron microscopy and advanced X-ray spectroscopy enhance insights into catalyst dynamics under working conditions. Notable contributions include studies on Cu-based catalysts for CO₂ to hydrocarbons/ethanol, Fe-doped NiO for OER, and IrOx-supported PEM electrolyzers.

His group advises PhD students in electrochemical systems and has published extensively in journals like Nature Energy and ACS Catalysis. The group operates advanced instrumentation for in-situ/operando analysis, including the new OperandoCat beamline at PETRA III.
