About
Prof. Dr. Arne Körtzinger is Professor of Marine Chemistry at Kiel University and Head of the Chemical Oceanography Research Unit at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. He holds adjunct faculty position at Dalhousie University, serves as Scientific Director of the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo in Cabo Verde, and is UNESCO Chair for Integrated Marine Sciences.
His research focuses on three interconnected areas: marine carbon cycle dynamics (natural processes and anthropogenic impacts), development of novel ocean observation methods, and biogeochemical processes in Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems. His work bridges field observations, technological innovation, and climate-relevant biogeochemical research.
Publication analysis reveals strong emphasis on carbon cycling, international scientific partnerships (particularly Germany-Cabo Verde collaborations), ocean observing technologies, and Arctic/polar biogeochemistry. Recent work demonstrates increasing focus on data synthesis and research infrastructure development.
He leads major projects including FUTURO (2024-2032), C-SCOPE (2021-2024), WASCAL MRP CCMS (2019-2023), and REEBUS (2019-2022). These initiatives focus on marine ecosystem studies, ocean observation enhancement, climate education, and upwelling system dynamics.
