About
Arianna Astolfi is a Full Professor of Environmental Technical Physics at the Department of Energy of the Polytechnic University of Turin. She leads the Applied Acoustics Laboratory and serves as Vice President of the European Acoustical Association (2022–present) and co-chair of its Room and Building Acoustics Technical Committee (2017–2023). Her research focuses on classroom acoustics, speech intelligibility, and acoustic material characterization, with over 100 peer-reviewed articles and three patents. Notable achievements include the SEM noise control device and two start-ups from PoliTo’s I3P incubator.
Education: Degree in Architecture (Polytechnic of Turin, 1995) and PhD in Building Physics (University of Genoa, 2000). Academic roles include editorial board memberships for Applied Acoustics and Frontiers in Built Environment, and leadership in national/international committees like UNI (since 2016). Awards include the 2001 REHVA Best Paper Award and Corresponding Membership in Turin’s Academy of Sciences (2024).
Research spans archeoacoustics (ancient architecture acoustics), noise control systems, and sustainable design. Key projects include BRIC-2024 (2025–2027) on non-auditory noise effects in educational/heathcare settings and S&N-S Light (2014–2015) validating the SEM device. She advises PhD students in Bioengineering, Architecture, and Energy Systems.
Teaching includes courses on environmental physics, sound engineering, and acoustics design at undergraduate and graduate levels. Partnerships with DENSO and ITALGAS foster industry-academia collaboration. Labs include the Applied Acoustics Lab and collaborations with INRiM for acoustic insulation studies.
